This is just a case of curiosity. Its commonly found in wild whale shark/diver contact. It is generally a case where the whale shark hasnt seen a diver before and so it doesnt know how to act other than observe the diver. As long as you do what these divers did and just keep distance from not letting the animal feel threatened, they'll just follow you around like this and just allow them to see you.

The reason why I think you were being attacked by a whale shark it's because it was'nt in cool enough because although sharks wants being it's friends unless it attacked someone and not be a gentle giant

The most it can do is hit you with its tail accidentally, even if a human was stupid enough to get in front of the whale shark and get pulled into its mouth, a) it has no teeth so it would just spit you out. b) its throat is like the width of a human fist it's impossible for it to eat you. Whale sharks are filter feeders they just swim around with their mouth open to catch krill and plankton to eat. It might get curious and come see what you are but that's about it.
